AI search

SEO, AEO, and GEO: three names for being found, explained.

Agencies now use a pile of acronyms. They describe one goal in three places: showing up in search results, being the answer, and being recommended by AI assistants.

Why the acronyms appeared

Search used to mean ten blue links. Now one question can return an AI summary, a map, a list of related questions, and ads before any normal result. Each new area got its own label, but they all draw on information that already exists about your business online.

Test yourself: which one is it?

Read each situation and decide which kind of visibility it describes.

Question 1 of 4

Someone asks ChatGPT for a reliable renovation contractor in Puchong, and your company is one of the names it suggests.

What actually changes for a business owner

Less than the hype suggests. The foundations stay the same. The goal widens from getting the click to being the trusted answer, even when nobody clicks.

  • Answer real customer questions plainly, near the top of the page
  • Keep your name, address, phone, and hours identical everywhere
  • Earn genuine reviews and mentions on other trusted sites
  • Measure calls, messages, and enquiries, not just clicks

Do you need a separate GEO agency?

Usually not. Be wary of anyone selling AI visibility as a secret technique or promising that ChatGPT will recommend you. Nobody controls what AI assistants say. They draw on the same websites, listings, and reviews that good SEO improves.

Common questions

Is AIO the same as GEO?

Mostly, yes. AIO (AI Optimization) and GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) both describe improving how AI assistants mention your business. Some people also use AIO to mean Google's AI Overviews. The work overlaps heavily.

Is SEO still worth it now that AI answers questions?

Yes. AI tools and AI Overviews draw on the web pages, business profiles, and reviews that SEO improves. Searches for a service nearby still lead to maps, calls, and websites.

Can anyone guarantee that ChatGPT will recommend my business?

No. AI answers vary by question, user, and time. What you can do is make your business easier for AI systems to understand and verify, which improves your chances.
